The latter is accomodation-- the creation of a new category, or heading in the tag cloud, to encompass the new data.

There's a developmental stage called pre-concrete reasoning, in which children's ability to process problems is limited by their neurological and experiential development. Early pre-concrete kids exhibit egocentrism-- behaving as though everyone sees, perceives, and thinks exactly as they do-- and centration, which is the tendancy to focus on one dimension of a given situation.

[03:27] <Yaijinden> Vernor Vinge proposed that with the current, geometric evolution of technology, it is only a matter of time before we create a form of consciousness radically more advanced than our own. This consciousness would have advantages over us the same way that language gives us an advantage over apes, or lions, or elephants.
[03:29] <Yaijinden> The moment that this consciousness evolved-- he called the point in time the singularity-- the world would be forever changed in its wake. And people who've come after him have proposed that there could well be a second, third, or fourth singularity to follow, each time increasing the scope of the consciousness and its ability to influence the world-- or universe-- around it.

[03:30] <Yaijinden> Some theorists believe, though, that once these consciousnesses start down a path of evolution, they are forever after denied certain alternatives. The nature and formation of their awareness prevents them from truly going back. Furthermore, some of these forms may actually be evolutionary dead ends.
